Herman Hartwich (1853-1926)
A painter of bucolic landscapes, Herman Hartwich was born in New York City and was taught to paint by his father, then studied in Munich, Germany from 1881 to 1885 where he established a studio. Hartwich was also in Paris, where he exhibited at the Paris Salon six times, winning a prize in 1892. He returned to New York in 1894. Exhibition venues included the National Academy of Design and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. He exhibited in Europe and won several gold and silver medals, including second prize at the 1901 Champs-Elysées Salon.
