ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT

British-born landscape artist Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait was one of the most popular painters of the 19th century.
Painting scenes of hunters and wildlife, Tait acquired a reputation as a frontier artist, although he never traveled further west than Chicago.
Born in 1819 in Liverpool, Tait was schooled in Lancaster and by his mid-teens worked at Agnews, a gallery in Manchester. He immigrated to the United States in 1850 after traveling with George Caitlin to England and Paris. Tait later became a member of the National Academy of Design.
Although Tait worked out of New York City, he spent a considerable amount of time in the Adirondack Mountains, becoming a proficient marksman and woodsman. Easterners accepted his paintings as definitive views of life on the frontier. The reproductions of his works by Currier and Ives made him one of the most popular artists of the time.
