BANCEL LA FARGE

1875-1938

Painter of marine, nature and religious subjects and mosaic artist, Bancel La Farge, son of John La Farge, one of the most important American artists and cultural figures of the 19th Century, was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He grew up spending summers with his family in Newport and Middletown, Rhode Island, and lived and worked in Mt. Carmel, Connecticut and New York City. La Farge painted in both watercolor and oil. He was a member of: the New York Watercolor Club; the Century Association; the Mural Painters; the American Art Association of Paris;the National Institute of Arts and Letters; the New Haven Paint & Clay Club; the American Federation of Arts; and the Society of Independent Artists. La Farge’s work has been exhibited at: the Art Institute of Chicago; the Paint and Clay Club; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Society of Independent Artists; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. The artist’s work is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and St. Charles College, Catonsville, Maryland, and can be seen in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Providence, Rhode Island.
