HARRISON BIRD BROWN
1831-1915Marine and bird painter Harrison Bird Brown was born in Maine in 1831. He began his career with a sign and banner painter in Portland and later opened his own shop, “H.B. Brown, Banner and Ornamental Painter.” In 1852, he moved to San Francisco, where he worked in Harrison Eastman’s engraving shop and made survey drawings for John Bartlett. He was exhibiting landscapes at the National Academy by 1858. He returned to Maine in 1860, where he gained recognition for his marines and landscapes. He settled in England in 1892 and died in London in 1915.
