HENRY PEMBER SMITH

1854-1907

Landscape painter Henry Pember Smith was born in Connecticut in 1854. Apparently self-taught, he resided in New York City and Asbury Park, New Jersey. He was best known for his pastoral New England landscapes, but he also painted shoreline scenes at the Jersey Shore, Newport, Maine, and Cape Cod. He was well-traveled, painting at England’s Cornish coat, Brittany and Normandy, and Venice during the 1880s. He exhibited at the National Academy several times, as well as at the Boston Art Club and Pennsylvania Academy. He died in 1907.
