JOHANN HERMANN CARMIENCKE
1810-1867Known primarily as a landscape painter, Johann H. Carmiencke was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1810. During the 1830s, he studied in Dresden, Copenhagen, and Leipzig. Before immigrating to the United States, Carmiencke worked as an established court painter to the King of Denmark, and had traveled through Sweden, Germany, and Italy. After arriving in the States in 1851, he resided in New York City and Brooklyn. He was soon recognized as a distinguished Hudson River School landscape artist. He was a member of the Brooklyn Academy and the Artists Fund Society, New York City. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Brooklyn Art Association. Carmiencke died in Brooklyn in 1867.
