JOHN FRANCIS MURPHY

1853-1921

Leading Tonalist landscape painter J. Francis Murphy was born in Oswego, New York, in 1853. He was largely self-taught, but may have studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He was concerned with capturing the emotive, poetic power of the landscape, and often employed translucent glazes to achieve atmospheric effects. Some of his paintings sold for very high prices during his lifetime. He died in 1921.
