JOSEPH PENNELL

1860-1926

Painter, etcher, lithographer, illustrator, and writer Joseph Pennell was born in Philadelphia in 1860. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art. A close friend of Whistler, he carried on the master’s etching style and was regarded as one of the leading etchers in America. He was also highly regarded for his pen and ink drawings. He wrote or illustrated about 100 books, including “The Life of James McNeill Whistler”, The Whistler Journal, Modern Illustration, and The Graphic Art Series. His illustrations appeared in Magazine of Art, Art Journal, and Century. He died in 1926.
