R.H. IVES GAMMELL

1893-1981

Gammell, born in 1893, is best known as an artist, author and teacher who carried on the tradition of the Boston School of realist painters. He studied at the Boston Music School and at the Académie Julian and Académie Baschet in Paris. His book Twilight of Painting, published in 1946, provided a history of the movement and set forth his position as an advocate of “Classic Realism.” He also authored The Boston Painters, 1900-30; Dennis Miller Bunker; The Shop Talk of Edgar Degas; and “A Pictorial Sequence based on ‘The Hound of Heaven’ by Francis Thompson.” He is well remembered for his murals, portraits, and biblical subjects, and also for his adherence to traditional and personal academic art instruction.
