WILLIAM MATTHEW PRIOR

1806-1873

Born in Bath, Maine, Prior was a self-taught itinerant portrait and landscape painter. In 1841 he decided to establish a studio in Boston with his in-laws, the Hamblins.

Prior is best known for his primitive works, which were often portraits distinguished by a background landscape of soft, muted tones, instead of the bright flat backgrounds which were widely used at that time.
