Will Howe Foote (1874-1965)

Portrait painter Will Howe Foote was born in Michigan in 1874. He studied in Paris with J.P. Laurens, Constant, and Whistler. He resided in Old Lyme, CT, from 1901-65, and was part of the colony of artists there. An Impressionist, he experimented with subject matter and technique and destroyed most works he considered not to be among his best. As a teacher, he assisted Frank DuMond at the Old Lyme Summer School of Art. He often spent his winters in warm climates, including the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Southwest, and made several trips to Bermuda. He exhibited widely throughout the United States, at the St. Louis Expo, the Carnegie Institute, and the Pan-Pacific Expo, among other locations. He died in 1965 in Florida.
